Those
who use
mowing
or
weed-eating
equipment
should
be
careful
and use
the
proper
safety
gear and
precautions
at all
times.
Make
sure
that the
equipment
you are
using is
in good,
working
condition
with all
safety
features
intact.
Inspect
the area
before
mowing
to
remove
any
large or
foreign
objects.
Always
be aware
of
people
walking
or
driving
nearby.
Dress
appropriately
for the
weather,
but
within
department
guidelines.
Stay
adequately
hydrated.
Know the
symptoms
of heat-related
or
cold-related
illness
and
notify
your
supervisor
immediately
if you
experience
any of
these symptoms.
Use
proper
lifting
techniques
while
lifting
objects.
Improper
lifting
techniques
may
result
in
serious
back
injuries
or other
injuries.
Keep the
object
as close
to your
body as
possible.
Use your
leg
muscles
- not
your
back
muscles
- to
lift the
object.
Once
you've
lifted
the
object,
turn by
pivoting
your
feet -
not by
twisting.
Remember
no one
is
immune
to back
injury.
Whether
you have
a strong
back or
have
hurt
your
back
before,
you must
use
proper techniques.
Whenever
possible,
park
your
equipment
where
backing
up isn't
necessary.
If you
do back
up, have
a
spotter
to guide
you,
communicating
with you
using
simple
hand
signals
that
both of
you
understand.
This is
important
because
it is
possible
to not
see
people -
especially
children
- or
equipment
behind
you as
you are
backing
up.
Wear the
safety
vests,
protective
eyewear,
and
other
equipment
required
for your
job.
Reflective
vests
allow
you to
be more
visible
to
motorists
when
working
near the
roadway.
Equipment
designed
to
protect
your
eyes or
ears is
necessary
when
using
certain
types of
equipment.
Gloves
are also
required
for many
jobs.
Any
department
needing
safety
equipment,
Gatorade,
etc. -
or any
department
having
questions
about
safety-related
issues,
can
contact
the
Risk
Management
Office
at (256)
775-7130.
