The Mayor provides
leadership, coordination and administration of city affairs. The
Mayor serves as the city's Executive Officer and is responsible for
the management of the city. The Mayor is the most visible of the
city's elected officials. He is held publicly accountable for the
performance of city government.
Some specific
duties and responsibilities of the Mayor include, but are not
limited to, the following:

Signing all motions, resolutions and
ordinances passed by the City Council.
- Making appointments to City boards and
committees (subject to approval by City Council).
- Participating in all legislative issues
affecting city government.
- Representing city interests in economic
and trade development.
- Preparation and presentation of
proclamations, resolutions, certificates and awards.

Our current Mayor
is Donald E. Green. Mayor Green began serving his second term as
Mayor of the City of Cullman in October of 2004. Mayor Green is a native of Cullman,
Alabama and the owner of Green-Tiffin Furniture. He has been a
member of Cullman's First Baptist Church since 1946. He graduated
from Cullman High School and has a BS degree from Auburn University,
a Masters Degree from the University of Alabama and a PhD Degree
from Texas A&M University.
Mayor Green has an extensive teaching
and coaching background. Mayor Green's teaching and coaching
experience includes the following:
- Teacher and basketball coach at
Baileyton Junior High School, where he led the basketball team to
its first county championship.
- Teacher at Cullman High School where he
also coached the boy's golf team, started a girl's golf team,
started a summer swim team and coached the Cullman High School Swim
Team.
- Instructor at Texas A&M University.
- Professor and Athletic Director at
Birmingham-Southern College where he started men's & women's tennis
teams, started a men's soccer program, was assistant baseball coach,
helped build the first lighted baseball complex on campus and the
Bill Battle Coliseum.
- Manager of the Cullman Swimming Pool.
- Water safety instructor trainer for the
American Red Cross.
- Worked for the Cullman Park &
Recreation Department.
- Coached youth baseball teams and
American Legion baseball.
- Officiated baseball, basketball and
football for twenty-five (25) years.
- Named Teacher of the Year in 1986 and
Retired Teacher of the Year in 1996.
Mayor Green has
been active in politics for many years. Below is a summary of Mayor
Green's political experience:
- Appointed to the Cullman City Council
in 1978.
- Elected to the Cullman City Council in
1980, 1984, 1988 and 1996. (He did not run for re-election in 1992.)
- President of the Cullman City Council
for eight (8) years.
- Chairman of the City of Cullman Fire
Committee for fourteen (14) years.
- Chairman of the City of Cullman Finance
Committee for four (4) years.
- First President of the Nesmith Senior
Housing Board.
- First President of the Cullman
Community Television Station (CATS 55) Board of Directors.
- Member of the Park & Recreation Board
for four (4) years.
- Member of the Cullman County Sports
Hall of Fame Committee.
- Served on the Cullman-Jefferson Gas
Board.
- Director of the Cullman Utilities
Board.
- Served as President of the State
Health, Physical Education and Recreation Association.
- Certified Municipal Official by the
Alabama League of Municipalities.
- Serves on Oktoberfest Board of
Directors.
Mayor Green has been
married to the former Dean Drake for forty-six years. He has three
children - Drew, Jonathan (Sherry), and Donna (Jerry) Shikle. He
also has five grandchildren - Anna, Cole, Madison, Thomas, &
Tiffany.
