The City of Cullman operates
under a Mayor-Council form of government. The City's elected officials consist
of a Mayor and five City Council members. Each are elected by popular vote to
serve concurrent four-year terms. Elections for the Mayor and Council are held
every four years in August. The
City Clerk is appointed by the City Council. The City Clerk authenticates and
records all official acts of the City. There are also various boards and
committees that work with the City Government. These boards and committees are
comprised of City of Cullman citizens who are appointed by the Mayor and the
City Council. |

Mayor |

The
Mayor, who is
elected by popular vote to serve a four-year term, serves as the Executive
Officer of the City.
As the administrative
head of the City of Cullman, the Mayor is responsible for the general management
of the City. The Mayor appoints department heads and advisory board members,
with Council approval, and signs all motions, resolutions and ordinances passed
by the City Council.
Our current Mayor,
Max A. Townson, is currently serving his
first term as Mayor of the City of Cullman.

page. Some of the Mayor's duties include:

Enforcing all laws and ordinances.
Exercising
administrative supervision and control over all departments.
Preparing and submitting annual budgets to the City Council.
Keeping the City Council fully advised of the financial conditions and
needs of the city.
Recommending actions to the City Council.
Hiring and terminating all employees of the City, with the exception of
some department heads.
Negotiating all contracts for the City of Cullman.

The City Council
consists of five members elected by popular vote to
serve four-year terms. Our City Council members are:

The Council President and President Pro-Tem is
chosen by the City Council members. The President of
the City Council is Garlan E. Gudger, Jr. President
Pro Tem is Jenny Folsom.
The
Cullman City Council meets at 7:00 p.m. every second
and fourth Monday nights in the City Hall
Auditorium. Meetings are open to the public.
The City Council is the governing body of the City
and has all legislative and policy-making powers.
The City Council acts only by ordinance, resolution
or motion. They adopt the annual budget and confirm
appointments made by the Mayor. Some other
responsibilities of the City Council include the
appropriation and issuance of bonds, the awarding of
contracts, levying assessments against property and
the leasing or disposing of City real estate.

City Clerk |

Our Interim City Clerk is Wesley Moore. The City Clerk is appointed by the
City Council and authenticates and records official acts of the City and
maintains all legislative records and documents.
The City Clerk is present at
all City Council meetings and is responsible for preparing the agenda and
recording the minutes of each meeting. The
City Clerk serves as a liaison between the
Mayor and the City Council and also functions as an
information center that serves the public.

The City of Cullman
has several boards and committees comprised of residents of the City of Cullman
who volunteer their time and expertise for the benefit of all citizens.
The
Mayor and the City Council appoint members to these boards and committees.

County Government
|
|
Cullman County is governed by a three-member County Commission,
with a Commission Chairman and two Associate Commissioners. These
commissioners are elected by popular vote to serve four-year terms. The Cullman City Council works closely with the Cullman County Commission on
matters which concern both the city and county.
